Suitable packaging for a viscous product must let the product be filled cleanly, sealed reliably and dispensed in the way the user expects. Squeeze bottles, pumps, nozzles and spouted pouches can all be credible, but the choice depends on flow behaviour, particle content, stringing, product compatibility, dose control and the pack’s ability to recover or collapse.
Observe the product at the lowest and highest expected filling and use temperatures, including any particles, aeration, stringing or settling. Define the dose, opening, squeeze or pump force, residue and cleanability requirements before deciding between a rigid container, dispensing closure or spouted pouch.
Viscosity alone is not enough to select a pack. Temperature, particles, stringing, air entrainment, product compatibility, dose size and the way the consumer empties the pack can change the preferred container, closure and trial method.

Higher resistance to flow can require a wider product path, more squeezable pack, stronger pump or controlled nozzle. Some products thin when sheared; others retain a yield stress and may not flow until pressure is applied. Particle size and fibres can block a narrow opening even when the bulk product appears pourable.
Provide a representative product sample and describe storage temperature because flow can change across the product’s life. Confirm that the container, liner, seal and fitment are compatible with the formulation and cleaning regime.
A squeeze bottle can suit products that flow under hand pressure and need simple dispensing. A pump can improve dose control but adds a dip tube, valve path and priming behaviour. A nozzle can support directional application, while a spouted pouch can combine flexible collapse with a reclosable fitment.
The format should be chosen by the intended dose, user force, pack orientation, residual product and closure cleanliness. Compare lotion pumps, nozzle caps and spouted pouches.
Check chemical interaction, stress or swelling, colour or odour transfer, fill accuracy at production temperature, product stringing, nozzle cut-off, contamination of the sealing land and the ability to close the pack without trapped product. For pumps and spouts, test priming, repeated dispensing and storage in the intended orientation.
Clean filling is a process and pack question. The opening and headspace must suit the filling nozzle, while the closure area must remain clean enough to form the intended seal.
Send the production formulation or a safe representative sample, expected temperature range, target fill, particles or fibres, density where known, desired dispensing method, current pack and intended filling equipment. State whether the pack will be squeezed, pumped, inverted, refrigerated or transported through parcel networks.
Use the compatibility test plan and include the exact closure or fitment. A water test can verify gross leakage but does not prove performance with a viscous formulation.
