Prepare a food-packaging quote
Provide the food, fill process, contact conditions, pack components and evidence requirements when requesting a quote.
Qualify the exact packaging component for its intended food-contact use. Material identity alone is not enough. The food or beverage type, contact time and temperature, repeated or single use, filling process and any barrier, liner, adhesive, ink or recycled content can change the evidence required. Use current Food Standards Agency guidance and competent specialist advice for the application.
Create an item-specific statement of intended use covering the food, direct or indirect contact, fill and storage temperatures, contact duration and whether the pack is single-use or reusable. Match supplier evidence to that statement and record any restriction or condition that the production process must observe.
Supplier documentation supports the decision but does not replace the food business’s own assessment of the intended use. Confirm the exact packaging reference and any use restrictions, and obtain competent advice or testing when the declaration does not cover the actual food or process.

| Approval element | Evidence or condition to control |
|---|---|
| Exact item | Supplier reference, material, layers, closure/liner and print |
| Intended food | Composition and any relevant simulant/use category determined by specialists |
| Use conditions | Contact time, fill/storage temperature and single or repeated use |
| Performance | Seal, leakage, barrier, shelf life and distribution |
| Control | Current documents, approval, traceability and change notification |
Request the current specification and applicable declaration or supporting document that identifies the material, product reference, intended conditions of use and relevant restrictions. Include closures, liners, labels or printed surfaces when they can contact food directly or indirectly. Confirm that the document applies to the supplied version rather than a general polymer family.
The Food Standards Agency provides current food-contact materials guidance. The buyer’s competent team should decide what evidence is required for the actual use.
Different foods can interact differently with packaging, while higher temperature or longer contact can increase the challenge to a material, coating, liner or adhesive. The intended use therefore needs to be stated: product type, fill temperature, storage duration, repeated use if any, and whether the pack is heated or chilled.
Do not extend evidence for one condition to a more demanding use without confirmation. Use representative filled-pack and shelf-life testing alongside regulatory evidence.
No. Food-contact suitability addresses one set of requirements; it does not prove that the packaging delivers the required oxygen, moisture or light barrier, remains leak-free for the shelf life, or qualifies for a recyclability claim. Those questions need separate evidence and tests.
Use the barrier guide for product-protection requirements and the UK recyclability guide for end-of-life assessment.
Retain the exact supplier and product reference, specification, declarations, restrictions and version dates; the intended food, process and storage conditions; migration or other specialist evidence where required; compatibility, seal and shelf-life results; artwork and traceability; and the authorised approval. Link the file to purchasing so substitutions trigger review.
