Spouted Pouches for Liquids
Spouted pouch specification

Specify the film, spout, cap and filling process as one system.

The range can support enquiries for drinks, sauces, concentrates, refills and other liquid products, but the final pouch construction must be matched to the contents, fill condition, required barrier, dispensing experience and production method.

Engineering inputs

ProductViscosity, chemistry, particles, oil or aroma content, fill temperature and storage period can affect film and seal selection.
PouchState usable capacity, width, height, gusset, headspace, barrier requirement, print area and whether the pouch must stand after filling.
Spout and capConfirm location, bore, cap fit, tamper feature, opening force and compatibility with the filling nozzle and end user.
SealsControl contamination in the seal area and validate the web, fitment seal and cap under realistic filling and transport conditions.
SupplyPlain and printed routes can have different quantities, artwork stages and lead times; these are confirmed against the exact request.

Recyclability needs the exact structure

A flexible pouch may be a laminate, a mono-material construction or another structure, and the spout and cap can use different materials from the web. Do not make a mono-material or recyclable claim from the front appearance or the phrase “plastic pouch”. Obtain a component-level declaration and check the intended collection route.

Recycle Now lists selected out-of-home collection routes for bags, wrapping and some pouches. In England, household collection requirements for plastic films and bags are scheduled from 31 March 2027. Collection availability and acceptance criteria should be checked at the time artwork is approved.

Trial and acceptance plan

Provide representative product and agree fill accuracy, seal appearance, leak, burst, drop, transport, opening and dispensing checks. Trial temperature, time and product should represent the intended process; water at room temperature is not a substitute when the real product presents different risk.

For machinery-filled projects, share pouch and spout samples, fill volume, viscosity and required rate with Lancing's filling machinery team. For material selection, use the mono-material pouch guide, spouted pouch guide and spouted pouch quote checklist.

Trial-ready pouch brief

Convert a spouted pouch range enquiry into one controlled liquid-pack specification.

The pouch web, barrier, spout, cap and filling method must be approved together. A range image does not establish the usable capacity, seal system or fitment required for a particular drink, concentrate, sauce or refill product.

Project handover fields

ProductState chemistry, viscosity, particles, oil or aroma content, fill temperature and intended shelf life.
Fill and headspaceDefine target volume or weight, required headspace, pouch dimensions and whether the filled pack must stand or pour in a particular orientation.
Web and barrierRecord the exact construction and the protection needed against moisture, oxygen, light, aroma or grease; avoid a generic high-barrier requirement without a product basis.
Spout and capConfirm fitment location, bore, cap engagement, tamper feature, opening force and compatibility with the filling nozzle and end user.
Filling routeState hand fill, through-spout fill or another process, together with nozzle size, required output and how the cap is applied.
SealsInclude the web seals and fitment seal in leak, burst, drop, compression and transport checks under representative product conditions.
Print and codingProvide artwork area, finish, quantity by version, coding method and any surface that must remain clear for inspection or gripping.
Claim evidenceObtain the complete construction, including spout and cap, before using mono-material or recyclable wording.

Acceptance should reflect use and distribution

Trial the real product at the intended fill condition. Check seal appearance, leak, burst or squeeze behaviour as appropriate, drop, transport, storage, cap opening, reclosure and controlled dispensing. A room-temperature water test can be useful for setup but is not a substitute when the actual product or temperature creates a different risk.

Use the recyclable pouch material brief for claim evidence and the spouted-pouch application guide for related products. For automatic or semi-automatic filling, share approved samples with the Lancing packaging machinery team.

The final quotation should identify the exact pouch, fitment and cap, available variants, plain or printed route, current minimum order, stock or production status, lead time and document availability.

Spouted pouch approval

Test the pouch web, spout, cap and fill process as one liquid-packaging system.

Spouted-pouch suitability depends on the contents, fitment and cap, sealing around the fitment, pouch geometry, filling route and transport conditions. Capacity alone does not establish compatibility.

ContentsViscosity, particles, oils or solvents, filling temperature, foaming and expected storage period.
FitmentSpout location, bore, material, cap type, tamper evidence, opening force and dispensing behaviour.
PouchExact web structure, barrier, sealant, size, gusset, print and filled-pack stability.
ProductionFill through spout or open pouch, cap application, sealing, coding, leak inspection and handling method.
ApprovalFitment seal, cap security, leakage, drop/transport, storage, dispensing and consumer-use criteria.

Use the pouch structure comparison and barrier guide before selecting samples. Where automatic pouch filling or capping is needed, provide the approved pouch and fitment to the Lancing machinery team.
